Energy and transition

Normandy, a land of energies

A major provider of nuclear, thermal and renewable energy, Normandy is the leading French region for energy in terms of employment and regional GDP. Whilst the vast majority of electricity production is from nuclear, and exported to other French regions and the UK, the region also sets itself apart through its aim to diversify the energy mix. The production of renewable energy has been doubled over the last 10 years, with the deployment of renewable maritime energy and hydrogen. Leader in the field of energy transition, Normandy is committed to pursuing this goal as a vector for regional development.

Stakeholders (hubs, sectors)

Normandie Energies: Sector of excellence for the energy mix, Normandie Énergies supports the economic development of the sector and guides the ecological transition of the region. It brings together 270 sector stakeholders around 4 hubs – renewables, nuclear, petrol and new uses.

Normandie Maritime: Since 2018, Normandie Maritime has had the aim of promoting and developing the regional maritime and river sector.

Choose Normandy for your project

A region with innumerable qualities to help with en-ergy development:

  • A leading industrial region;
  • A logistics sector led by the leading French port complex of HAROPA, bringing together Le Havre, Rouen and Paris, generating flows between Paris and Normandy;
  • The Seine Axis is an important route for trade and passenger flows;
  • 640km of coastline.

Hydrogen in Normandy:

  • Skills developed over time for the production, stor-age and use of hydrogen in total safety (petro-chemicals, chemicals and aerospace);
  • A large consumer of hydrogen at a regional level. Normandy consumes 350 000 tons of the 900 000 tons consumed in France every year (38% of na-tional production);
  • 10 H2 recharge stations already rolled out in Nor-mandy (Eas’HyMob project);
  • Largest test site in Europe for liquid hydrogen (Ari-ane Group in Vernon);
  • Development of the largest production project for H2 – Normand’Hy;

Hydrogen Normandy:

In October 2018, the Nor-mandy Regional Council became the first French region to approve its support plan for the hydrogen sector, with a budget envelope of €15m over 3 years. This plan had two objectives:

  • To accelerate the energy transition and decar-bonisation of the economy;
  • To create a sector of the future in Normandy.

Marine Renewable Energies in Normandy

  • Leading French potential for marine renewable en-ergies, with 200 hectares available;
  • Natural geographical advantages to the develop-ment of offshore wind. Half (5 out of 10) of the planned offshore wind farms are in Normandy;
  • Port infrastructure and skills to host the activities associated with the use and maintenance of off-shore wind farms (from Le Havre, Cherbourg and Dieppe, as well as Caen-Ouistreham and Fécamp);
  • The Siemens Gamesa factory for the production of wind turbines in Le Havre.

Research & Development and training to help accel-erate the transition:

Excellence laboratories: Coria, Greah, LCS, Lusac, Institut Carnot, CNRT matériaux, Crismat, Esix, Certam, etc;
Campus H2 Academy: offering a technical platform for higher level training to increase skill levels within the hydrogen sector.
